Spice It Up – Best Ways to Enhance Your Meat
Preparing the perfect meat is truly an art form. Whether it’s brisket, pork, turkey or chicken, special care must be put into how it’s cooked and seasoned.
At Smokey Mo’s BBQ, we’ve been perfecting our food for more than 20 years. If you’re unable to join us for a delicious meal and a smile, you can always enhance your own meat at home with these spicy tips.
Season It with BBQ Dry Rub
A dry rub is a mixture of spices and herbs combined to create mouth-watering flavors. At Smokey Mo’s BBQ we use a proprietary blend, but any good Texas grocery chain will have several options available. You can also blend your own at home.
While a mixture of salt and pepper (also known as Dalmatian Rub) is a common go-to for pitmasters country-wide, there is no shortage in ways to spice up your meat. We’ve chosen a few recipes you can easily make at home with ingredients commonly found in your pantry.
This Texas Style BBQ Dry Rub comes to you from the House of Yumm. Just blend the below ingredients together and store them in a sealed container.
- ¼ cup light brown sugar
- 1 tbsp smoked paprika
- 1 tsp ground cayenne pepper
- 1 tsp chili powder
- 1 tbsp salt
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1/2 tsp ground black pepper
Here’s another from Simply Whisked. This recipe is also done by simply combining all the ingredients together.
- 3 tablespoons brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons paprika
- 2 tablespoons ground cumin
- 1 tablespoon mustard powder
- 1 tablespoon onion powder
- 1 tablespoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon coarse salt
How to Apply Your Dry Rub
To get the most out of your dry BBQ rub, make sure to thoroughly coat the meat and then shake off any excess rub. It’s important to find the right balance so you don’t over-season the meat.
Since dry BBQ rubs don’t introduce excess liquid to the meat, you’ll get a beautiful sear more quickly. If you’ve ever had our brisket, you’ll know what we’re talking about. The dry rub contributes to the smokey and flavorful “bark” that our customers love.
BBQ rub is not just for brisket though. It is the perfect enhancement for chicken, ribs, and pork loin.
Sauce It Up
There is one element that all barbecue has in common. You can always choose a different meat or different sides, but whatever choice you made, chances are you’ll be lathering on the BBQ sauce.
While we firmly believe our BBQ is delicious enough to stand on its own, we can never fault anyone for ladling on the sauce.
Find the BBQ sauce you like most and use it for any meat prepared any way – whether you’re having a plate or a sandwich. You can also use it as a marinade and throw your meat on the grill or smoker already coated.
And if you haven’t tried putting a little sauce on your sides, you’re definitely missing out. I mean, it doesn’t get much better than mac n’ cheese with some sweet and spicy BBQ sauce.
If your mouth is starting to water, it’s time for some BBQ. Use these tips to make a delicious meal at home, or head on over to any of our 16 stores and get some good ol’ Texas BBQ done right.
